Archives 2000-2017

Two decades ago, my life as an artist was very different. Rya took a back burner because I knew of no suppliers.
Here I am sharing non-rya art of my recent past. Some is still available for you to purchase, and some art services I no longer offer. I hope you enjoy these images because creating them was a big part of my artistic life during those years.  Artists create to share and I would like to offer you this opportunity to smile.

Art Created for Local Businesses

One of my goals as a working artist was to help my business-owning friends do better at what they do by highlighting their work in art!

Enjoy a trip through the years as these works of art took shape in Byrdcall Studio.

Custom Painted Murals

I truly enjoyed transforming plain walls into habitats and scenes that tell a story. Here are a few of my favorite projects that have set a mood or served a specific purpose for my customers. I no longer paint walls, but enjoy sharing the images with you.

Custom Painted Murals

Wall murals are a great way to make your home or office totally unique and inspiring for YOU! I use water-based and washable interior house paints of the highest quality.

Note:  Sorry for the tease, but my mural painting days are over as “rya” has taken over most of my life now.… but in the meantime, feel free to enjoy the murals and signs in the slide show below.

Floorcloths & Table Coverings

While my work has shifted to rya rugs, it is interesting to note that I went through a very intense floorcloth making period. To me it was quite a science to turn a sheet of canvas duck into an artistic piece which historically was the precursor to linoleum flooring. These were challenging and are able to withstand daily use on the floor or as table coverings, placemats, and even as small jewelry pins. To this day I use several floorcloths in my home.

Hand Painted Glassware

Don’t ask me why, but I fell in love with painting on glass. I guess I like a challenge and I like to amaze people. To this day, I get frequent requests for glass painting. What I offer now in my glass painting is a chance for you to look through these past works and enjoy.

Hand-Printed Shirts

I have designed and carved almost 30 different images in wood or linoleum which I have available on paper for framing. But I also have printed on high quality 100% cotton shirts. In recent years I did shows where I brought hundreds of hand-printed shirts from which you could choose your design, size, color, and style. Now that I am focused on the rya rugs, I am no longer printing shirts, but I still have MANY shirts available in a basket for every size with a selection of designs and colors. At this point I can not guarantee all designs in all sizes and colors. The best way find what is available is to go to my Etsy shop. In my Byrdcall Etsy shop I show the shirt images by design or size, and photograph the available shirts. You can use a dropdown menu to select the actual shirt you will receive–and when they are gone, they are gone.

Paintings

When I paint for myself, I paint what comes from within. Sometimes it is a detail image of something I find to have beauty, and sometimes it is abstract.

Pets & Animals

Over the recent years, there has been a growing interest in my pet art, so rather than making pet-lovers search my entire website to find items relating to pets, I have gathered all pet items from every category and placed them here for you to find easily. I love to show this work because it makes people smile. I am not taking new orders for pet art, so please just enjoy the slide show and smile.

Woodcuts & Linocuts

This is one category where you can be pretty sure I can still help you out if you would like to buy a print. My prints all come in limited editions of 25 or 50 hand-rubbed prints, so odds are I do have a print on fine art quality paper waiting for your request. I just love the sharp contrast between black and white. Return to this page often because I have been quite prolific in carving these images. A “woodcut” is an image which I carve into the surface of a piece of wood. I roll ink onto the carved surface, then press and burnish the image onto paper or fabric with a wooden spoon.

The areas which are carved away will not touch the ink, while the areas not carved become the black design on the white surface. A “linocut”  is the very same thing except the image is carved into a piece of linoleum.
