“Monarchs and Milkweed”   Linocut

My friends are surprised to see that I encourage milkweed in my garden among my vegetables.  Milkweed gives me great joy for its symmetrical beauty, its edible buds, flowers, and pods (after it is cooked); but the best thing milkweed brings me is MONARCH butterflies.  These winged beauties from Mexico give me hope that they will lay their eggs on my milkweed, give me the joy of watching the striped larvae feed on the milkweed leaves, then create their magic chrysalis with gold-leafed spots before emerging to fly on towards Mexico
